OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer, a prevalent and deadly disease among women, comes second only to breast cancer, with over 700 daily deaths. The Pap smear test is a widely utilized screening method for detecting cervical cancer in its early stages. However, this manual screening process is prone to a high rate of false-positive outcomes because of human errors. Researchers are using machine learning and deep learning in computer-aided diagnostic tools to address this issue. These tools automatically analyze and sort cervical cytology and colposcopy images, improving the precision of identifying various stages of cervical cancer. METHODOLOGY: This article uses state-of-the-art deep learning methods, such as ResNet-50 for categorizing cervical cancer cells to assist medical professionals. The method includes three key steps: preprocessing, segmentation using k-means clustering, and classifying cancer cells. The model is assessed based on performance metrics viz; precision, accuracy, kappa score, precision, sensitivity, and specificity. In the end, the high success rate shows that the ResNet50 model is a valuable tool for timely detection of cervical cancer. OUTPUTS: In conclusion, the infected cervical region is pinpointed using spatial K-means clustering and preprocessing operations. This sequence of actions is followed by a progressive learning technique. The Progressive Learning technique then proceeded through several stages: Stage 1 with 64 × 64 images, Stage 2 with 224 × 224 images, Stage 3 with 512 × 512 images, and the final Stage 4 with 1024 × 1024 images. The outcomes show that the suggested model is effective for analyzing Pap smear tests, achieving 97.4% accuracy and approx. 98% kappa score.

Biological interpretation of metabolomic datasets often ends at a pathway analysis step to find the over-represented metabolic pathways in the list of statistically significant metabolites. However, definitions of biochemical pathways and metabolite coverage vary among different curated databases, leading to missed interpretations. For the lists of genes, transcripts and proteins, Gene Ontology (GO) terms over-presentation analysis has become a standardized approach for biological interpretation. But, GO analysis has not been achieved for metabolomic datasets. We present a new knowledgebase (KB) and the online tool, Gene Ontology Analysis by the Integrated Data Science Laboratory for Metabolomics and Exposomics (IDSL.GOA) to conduct GO over-representation analysis for a metabolite list. The IDSL.GOA KB covers 2393 metabolic GO terms and associated 3144 genes, 1,492 EC annotations, and 2621 metabolites. IDSL.GOA analysis of a case study of older versus young female brain cortex metabolome highlighted 82 GO terms being significantly overrepresented (FDR < 0.05). We showed how IDSL.GOA identified key and relevant GO metabolic processes that were not yet covered in other pathway databases. Overall, we suggest that interpretation of metabolite lists should not be limited to only pathway maps and can also leverage GO terms as well. IDSL.GOA provides a useful tool for this purpose, allowing for a more comprehensive and accurate analysis of metabolite pathway data. IDSL.GOA tool can be accessed at https://goa.idsl.me/ .

Inter-chemical correlations in metabolomics and exposomics datasets provide valuable information for studying relationships among chemicals reported for human specimens. With an increase in the number of compounds for these datasets, a network graph analysis and visualization of the correlation structure is difficult to interpret. We have developed the Chemical Correlation Database (CCDB), as a systematic catalogue of inter-chemical correlation in publicly available metabolomics and exposomics studies. The database has been provided via an online interface to create single compound-centric views. We have demonstrated various applications of the database to explore: 1) the chemicals from a chemical class such as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), phthalates and tobacco smoke related metabolites; 2) xenobiotic metabolites such as caffeine and acetaminophen; 3) endogenous metabolites (acyl-carnitines); and 4) unannotated peaks for PFAS. The database has a rich collection of 35 human studies, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and high-quality untargeted metabolomics datasets. CCDB is supported by a simple, interactive and user-friendly web-interface to retrieve and visualize the inter-chemical correlation data. The CCDB has the potential to be a key computational resource in metabolomics and exposomics facilitating the expansion of our understanding about biological and chemical relationships among metabolites and chemical exposures in the human body. Objective: Work related musculo skeletal disorders (WMSD) are very common among dental practitioners who use precise hand-wrist motions and prolonged static postures. The aim of this study was to develop an educative ergonomic plan and test its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of musculo-skeletal disorders among dental practitioners. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on a random sample of 50 dental practitioners of both genders (25 male, 25 female) practising for more than 4 years in urban Bengaluru, India and showing symptoms of neck pain, back pain or wrist pain. In the first round of the questionnaire data was collected from all 50 dentists. Next an educative ergonomic plan was developed which included simple exercises and recommendations in the form of do's and don'ts. The study population were asked to follow the guidelines given and perform the exercises given in the poster daily for a period of 3 months. Then, the questions were again asked. The differences in responses during the first stage and second stage were analyzed. Results: The use of the ergonomic plan led to a statistically significant improvement in certain ergonomic practises such as practise of changing their positions during clinical practice, keeping shoulders and arm at correct level while working and keeping instruments within hand reach. There was a statistically significant reduction in pain levels after the use of the ergonomic plan. Conclusion: The ergonomic plan in the form of recommendations and exercises were an effective tool in improving ergonomic practises and reducing the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders among dental practitioners. Objetivo: Distúrbios osteomusculares relacionados ao trabalho (DORT) são muito comuns entre os dentistas que usam movimentos precisos de mão e punho e posturas estáticas prolongadas. O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver um plano ergonômico educativo e testar sua eficácia na redução de sintomas de distúrbios osteomusculares em dentistas. Material e Métodos: Este estudo foi realizado em uma amostra aleatória de 50 dentistas de ambos os sexos (25 homens, 25 mulheres) trabalhando há mais de 4 anos na área urbana de Bengaluru, Índia e apresentando sintomas de dor no pescoço, dor nas costas ou dor no punho. Na primeira etapa do questionário foram coletados dados de todos os 50 dentistas. Em seguida, foi desenvolvido um plano ergonômico educativo que incluía exercícios simples e recomendações na forma de fazer e não fazer. Os participantes foram solicitados a seguir as orientações dadas e realizar os exercícios indicados no pôster diariamente por um período de 3 meses. Em seguida, as perguntas foram feitas novamente. Foram analisadas as diferenças nas respostas durante a primeira etapa e a segunda etapa. Resultados: A utilização do plano ergonômico levou a uma melhora estatisticamente significativa em algumas práticas ergonômicas, como a prática de mudar de posição durante o atendimento clínico, manter ombros e braços no nível correto durante o trabalho e manter os instrumentos ao alcance das mãos. Houve redução estatisticamente significativa dos níveis de dor após a utilização do plano ergonômico. Conclusão: O plano ergonômico na forma de recomendações e exercícios foi uma ferramenta eficaz na melhoria das práticas ergonômicas e na redução dos sintomas de distúrbios osteomusculares entre os cirurgiões-dentistas. Heavy metals' amassment in the soil environment is a threat to crop and agricultural sustainability and consequentially the global food security. For achieving enhancement of crop productivity in parallel to reducing chromium (Cr) load onto food chain demands continuous investigation and efforts to develop cost-effective strategies for maximizing crop yield and quality. In this context, we investigated the amelioration of Cr(VI) toxicity through ß-pinene in experimental dome simulating natural field conditions. The protective role of ß-pinene was determined on physiology, morphology and ultrastructure in Zea mays under Cr(VI) stress (250 and 500 µM). Results exhibited a marked reduction in the overall growth (shoot and root length and dry matter) of Z. mays plants subjected to Cr(VI) stress. Photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids) were evidently reduced, and there was a loss of membrane integrity. Supplementation of ß-pinene (100 µM), however, declined the toxicity induced by Cr(VI). Interestingly, Cr-tolerant abilities were improved in relation to plant growth, photosynthetic pigments and membrane integrity with the combined treatment of Cr(VI) and ß-pinene. ß-Pinene also reduced the root-mediated uptake of Cr(VI) and translocation to shoots. Moreover, significant ultrastructural damages recorded in roots and shoots under Cr(VI) stress were partially reverted upon addition of ß-pinene. Our analyses revealed that ß-pinene mitigates Cr(VI) toxicity in Z. mays, either by membrane stabilization or serving as a barrier to the uptake of Cr from soil. Thus, exogenous supply of ß-pinene can be an effective alternative to mitigate Cr toxicity in soil. However, it is deemed essential to investigate further the responses throughout the life cycle of the plant on ß-pinene supplementation under natural conditions.

Soil alkalinity caused by salts, such as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and the frequently associated waterlogging problems are pervasive in agriculture and have a deleterious impact on crop production. However, various plant growth regulators, including brassinosteroids, are considered to be important against different abiotic stresses experienced by plants due to drought, salinity, and heavy metal stress. We investigated the putative role of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL), an active brassinosteroid, on red rice plants experiencing alkaline stress. Seedlings were pre-treated with 0.01 µM EBL for 30 min and later, exposed to NaHCO3 (25 mM) and were sampled, 5 days after treatments. Results showed that the pre-treatment of seedlings with EBL under non-stress conditions could promote rice plant growth. Growth parameters including dry weight (DW), root and coleoptile lengths were reduced under alkaline stress, whereas EBL application reduced the level of inhibition, as compared with NaHCO3 treatment. Enhanced levels of malondialdehyde content, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide radicals were significantly diminished by EBL pre-treatment. Moreover, pre-treatment of EBL to alkaline-treated rice seedlings largely stimulated the enzymatic activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Thus, the results suggest that pre-application of EBL significantly ameliorates alkaline stress in rice.

We examined the possible role of monoterpene ß-pinene in providing protection against Cr(VI) toxicity in maize (Zea mays). Treatment with ß-pinene (10 µM) significantly alleviated Cr(VI) accumulation and recuperated Cr(VI) caused decline in root and coleoptile growth in maize. ß-Pinene addition caused a decline in Cr(VI)-induced accumulation of superoxide anion, hydroxyl ion, hydrogen peroxide and confirmed by in-situ detection of ROS using histochemical localization. It suggested that the ß-pinene quenches/neutralizes enhanced ROS generated under Cr(VI) exposure. ß-Pinene also reduced Cr(VI)-induced electrolyte leakage, thereby suggesting its role in membrane stabilization. Further, ß-pinene regulated the activity of scavenging enzymes, thereby suggesting a role in modulating Cr(VI)-induced oxidative damage. In conclusion, our results suggest that the addition of ß-pinene has a protective role against Cr(VI) stress and provides resistance to maize against Cr(VI) toxicity.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is considered relatively contraindicated in patients with intracranial space-occupying lesions. A 53-year-old male presented with a 5-year history of medication-refractory major depressive disorder. Brain imaging findings suggested the presence of a ruptured dermoid cyst in the transverse sinus and a calcified meningioma in the temporal lobe sulcal space. There was no evidence of mass effect. Neurofibromatosis was the only other clinical condition present. The patient had no clinical neurological deficits. Since the depression was severe and he was suicidal, ECT was advised. There was a substantial improvement after four bilateral and then eight right unilateral brief-pulse ECTs administered on alternate days, thrice weekly. There were no complications associated with ECT. The treatment gains were maintained with maintenance antidepressant medication at a 1-year follow-up. This is probably the first reported case of the use of ECT in a medication-refractory, severely depressed patient with a ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst and with a calcifying meningioma. The results testify to the safety of ECT even in high-risk patients.

Nitric Oxide (NO) is a bioactive signaling molecule that mediates a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. The present study investigated the role of NO (as SNP [sodium nitroprusside]) in ameliorating lead (Pb)-toxicity in Triticum aestivum (wheat) roots. Pb (50 and 250 µM) alone and in combination with SNP (100 µM) was given to hydroponically grown wheat roots for a period of 0-8 h. NO supplementation reduced the accumulation of oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, conjugated dienes, hydroxyl ions and superoxide anion) and decreased the antioxidant enzyme activity in wheat roots particularly up to 6 h, thereby suggesting its role as an antioxidant. NO ameliorated Pb-induced membrane damage in wheat roots as evidenced by decreased ion-leakage and in situ histochemical localization. Pb-exposure significantly decreased in vivo NO level. The study concludes that exogenous NO partially ameliorates Pb-toxicity, but could not restore the plant growth on prolonged Pb-exposure.

The present study examined the toxic effects of Cr(VI; 100, 250 and 500 µM) in maize seedlings by investigating the changes in carbohydrate metabolism after 48, 96, and 144 h of exposure. Cr-stress results in severe alterations in the contents of carbohydrates and reducing sugars and the activities of carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes, amylases, phosphatases and phosphorylases, and invertases in maize seedlings. Under Cr stress, the contents of carbohydrates and reducing sugars declined in roots, whereas an increase was noticed in leaves. The catalytic activity of carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes, except invertases, in roots declined in the presence of Cr(VI) in a concentration- and exposure time-dependent manner. In contrast, the activities of these enzymes were enhanced in leaves under Cr(VI) stress. The activity of invertases increased with increasing amount of Cr(VI) but declined with an increase in the time interval. In conclusion, our results show that carbohydrate metabolism is severely affected under Cr(VI) toxicity. The study suggests that Cr-induced perturbations in the carbohydrate metabolism are one of the factors resulting in growth inhibition under Cr(VI) stress.

Indian religions and cultures are diverse and have always influenced the way people live in this part of the world. Religion has been a very dominant influence in marriage, choice of marital partner and cohabitation. The present paper looks at various religions in India and their influence on sexual attitudes and the institution of marriage. Sikhism, Jainism and the Parsi faith with its influence on sexuality and marriage are reviewed. Christian values and the role they play in shaping sexual notions as well Christian marriage traditions are explored. The paper also looks at the influences Islam has had on marriage and sexuality and ends with a feminist perspective on women and sexual attitudes towards women.

The present study investigated the effect of Arsenic (As; 5, 10, 50 µM) on protein and sugar metabolism vis-à-vis oxidative damage during early germination process and radicle emergence (at 12, 24 and 48 h stage) in Phaseolus aureus. As-exposure (50 µM) significantly enhanced protein content (by 40-60%), whereas carbohydrate content declined (by 31-44%) over that in the control. It was associated with a decline in the activities of proteases (47-53%), and increase in the activities of α- and ß-amylases, starch phosphorylases, and acid invertases by 3.0, 2.6, 4.8, and 1.7 times after 48 h exposure to 50 µM As. The alteration in protein and carbohydrate metabolic machinery was also accompanied by As-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage. As treatment enhanced malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide content by 46-252% and 23-216%, and hydroxyl and superoxide ion generation by 15-104% and 17-278%, respectively. As-induced lipid peroxidation and membrane disruption was confirmed by enhanced electrolyte leakage (by 49%) and reduced cell viability (by 43%). Furthermore, in response to 50 µM As, the activities of superoxide dismutases, catalases, ascorbate peroxidases, guaiacol peroxidases, and glutathione reductases increased by 77%, 70%, 116%, 43% and 120%, respectively, in radicles at 48 h stage over that in the control. The study concludes that As inhibits radicle emergence and elongation in germinating P. aureus seeds by altering biochemical processes related to sugar metabolism and inducing an ROS-mediated oxidative damage.
